Tim Cone as Team Consultant of B-meg

“But as we all know, in the PBA, nothing is final unless you have already signed a contract. Yes, (Coach) Tim is retiring from Alaska because he is closely being considered as team consultant of B-Meg. But we can’t openly announce it until he formally signs the contract.”

Sources said Cone wants to be released because he has been dissatisfied with the state of basketball affairs in the Alaska franchise, in particular, the lack of efforts on the part of management to strengthen the lineup in the midst of the continued buildup of the other PBA teams.

Alaska will hold a press conference Thursday either to confirm the rumors or state that Cone will stay on as coach.

But the rumors were so powerful, it reververated in Hong Kong where the PBA board of governors was meeting and prompting the immediate order for Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo to return to Manila.

“The main reason why coach Tim wants to leave the team is that some of his key players like Joe (Devance) had been traded, and few years from now his marquee players may follow,” said a source who requested not to be identified.

“Knowing coach Tim, he wants to have a competitive line-up,” the same source said.

Point guard LA Tenorio, shooting guard Cyrus Baguio and center Sonny Thoss were reported to have become agitated following the departure of Devance and were rumored to be asking to be traded.

The source added that while teams like newly-crowned Governors’ Cup champion Petron Blaze, Barangay Ginebra B-Meg of San Miguel Corp. (SMC), as well as Talk ’N Text and Meralco of Manny V. Pangilinan have been able to strengthen their rosters through trades, Alaska has not done anything similar.

“Imagine that SMC and Pangilinan’s teams can’t make trades straight up, there has to be a third party. But they are finding ways to solidify their teams,” said the source.

Should Cone depart, that would signal the end of one of the longest owner-coach relationships in the PBA, a relationship that dates back over two decades.

“They are very good friends,” said Trillo who confessd that he had no idea what will happen next.

Team owner Fred Uytengsu Jr. will hold a press conference Thursday where it was gathered he will make an important announcement.

Cone still has a live contract, and it will expire at the end of 2013 Season.

“I think he asked for his release,” said a source Wednesday who asked not to be named since he’s not authorized to discuss the sensitive issue. “But what we know, as far as management is concerned, he’s still has two years.”

The Bulletin tried to contact Cone but calls and even text messages were not answered.

However, Trillo confirmed that Cone will attend the press conference.

“Who knows?” he said. “Even the new coach might be there.”

The last time Cone met his coaching staff and Trillo was during last Sunday’s PBA Rookie Draft, where the Aces selected Smart-Gilas standout Mac Baracael with the No. 6 overall pick, while adding Eric Salamat, Julius Paculado and Ariel Mepana in the second round.

The rookies are expected to join the team’s practice session Wednesday afternoon at the Reyes Gym in Manduyong.

According to sources, Cone and Uytengsu met recently, and the former has asked for his release from the team he guided to 13 PBA championships, the last of which was during the 2010 Fiesta Cup against San Miguel Beer.

Rene Pardo Now Re-Shaping Bmeg

HONG KONG. – Following up a successful stint as chairman of the Philippine Basketball Association is what Rene Pardo now looks forward to with B-MEG in the coming 37th PBA season.

That is why the man who is the Llamados' representative to the PBA Board is eager for the PBA planning session here to wind up, so he could return home and be with the team which has some returning key players and a new coach in Richard del Rosario.

“Kerby (Raymundo) is returning, and so is Rico (Maierhofer) kaya medyo excited kami,” said Pardo during a dinner tendered by Powerade's JB Baylon Tuesday.

"Pagbabalik ng mga iyun, then they will join our frontline that also features Marc Pingris, (Rafi)Reavis and (Joe) Devance. With James (Yap) and PJ (Simon) also healthy, medyo mabigat-bigat na ulit ang core ng team namin," he added.

With Raymundo sidelined by a third-degree sprain and Maierhofer by a torn anterior cruciate ligament, B-MEG struggled for most of last season and wound up with a 20-24 overall win-loss record under rookie coach Jorge Gallent.

The performance of the team, which no less than San Miguel Corporation president and COO Ramon S. Ang described as the "most talented" among SMC's three PBA teams , led to the coaching change.

Del Rosario, a journeyman center in his pro career, has served as an assistant coach in Welcoat/Rain or Shine and under Gallent and the news of his elevation that reached here Tuesday evening is a very welcome one for Pardo.

"Ngayon tapos na ang mga haka-haka, ang mga speculations and the entire team can now concentrate on shaping up for the season-opening Philippine Cup that kicks off on Oct. 2 through practices that start Friday.

For the moment, Del Rosario will be holding his new post in an acting capacity since he still has an obligation with the St. Benilde Blazers in the ongoing NCAA basketball tournament.

There is enough time for Pardo to savor his stint as PBA chairman.

He took over the PBA reins four months earlier than expected from Air21's Lito Alvarez after the latter was tasked to serve the government, before serving out his own mandated 12-month term. 

Through that period, Pardo divided his attention between helping guide B-Meg team manager Alvin Patrimonio and the league's other ball clubs. In addition, the PBA had a new commissioner in Chito Salud, returned to a three-conference format and unveiled a farm system-like tourney, the PBA Developmental League, for wannabe-pros.

He, with the aid of Salud and the other governors, must have done something right for the league posted a record-setting P88 million in gross revenues and got a 10th member, Shopinas.com that took over the old Barako Bull franchise, near the end.

“It was very fulfilling,” he said. “I had my moments, my ups and downs. But generally, I was happy with what we have achieved last season.”

The highly successful D-League kickoff tourney was the one he proudly singles out. “The formation of the D-League was a major achievement for me,” he stated.

Richard Del Rosario, Is Now The Coach of Bmeg Derby Ace Llamados

The suspense drama as to who will coach B-MEG Llamados for the coming 37th PBA season has finally ended.
The Llamados are tapping a first-time pro league head coach in Richard del Rosario, a highly-placed source privy to the discussions told InterAKTV on Tuesday.

According to the source, Del Rosario will assume the head coaching post with current head coach Jorge Gallent sliding down as his assistant.
Del Rosario, also the coach of the College of St. Benilde in the NCAA, served as deputy to Gallent last season. He was also a former assistant coach of Caloy Garcia in Rain or Shine.
But the former PBA player’s appointment came as a big surprise after days of speculation that multi-titled coach Jong Uichico will take over the post.
Uichico, an eight-time PBA champion, was earlier named co-coach of the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings alongside Siot Tanquingcen.

Jong Uichico Will Coach the Llamados

HONG KONG—All indications point to seasoned Barangay Ginebra mentor Jong Uichico taking up the head-coaching duties at B-Meg starting this season in the Philippine Basketball Association.

San Miguel Corp. officials are said to keep a very short list of possible replacements for Jorge Gallent, who will slide down to assistant coach after compiling a 20-24 record in his first season as PBA head coach.

The prospects of Uichico coaching a third San Miguel team in his career loomed large after Siot Tanquingcen was named as his co-head coach at Ginebra.

That left Uichico, Gee Abanilla of Petron and Richard Del Rosario, one of Gallent’s deputies at B-Meg, as the remaining candidates.

Uichico, the most experienced in the group, commands a lot of respect from the players, making him the most logical choice to succeed Gallent.

Gallent enjoyed unprecedented success as a coach of Harbour Centre in the defunct Philippine Basketball League, but his stint on the
B-Meg bench was wracked by injuries to several key players.

Under Gallent’s watch, B-Meg floundered as injuries sidelined Kerby Raymundo, former Rookie of the Year Rico Maierhofer and two-time MVP James Yap.

The Llamados finished fourth in the Philippine Cup, seventh in the Commissioner’s Cup and sixth in the Governors’ Cup last season.

Uichico has won a total of eight titles so far, including six with San Miguel Beer and two with the Gin Kings.

Ramon S. Ang, president and CEO of San Miguel Corp., told reporters last week that Gallent’s replacement “will come from within the (San Miguel) family.”

The rumor mills still churned, however, and linked Alaska coach Tim Cone to the job.

Cone still has a live contract with the only team he has coached for since 1989.

Mark Barroca, selected fifth overall by Shopinas.com, is headed to
B-Meg Derby Ace as part of the Llamados’ previous deal with the Clickers.

Shopinas.com will secure in exchange forward Bryan Ilad, the 16th pick, from B-Meg and another Llamado from among Rommel Adducul, Don Allado, Jonathan Fernandez and Val Acuna.
Meanwhile,A steady force for Smart Gilas Pilipinas the past three years, the 5-foot-9 Casio has helped the national team regain respect in the continent and rise as a contender in the coming Fiba Asia Championship.
This year’s top overall pick in the PBA Rookie Draft is hoping he could help alter the misfortunes of the Powerade Tigers.
“It will be quite different in the PBA but I know my stint in Smart Gilas could help my team,” said Casio, the smallest No. 1 pick in 25 years.
The crafty playmaker out of La Salle has established himself as the most dependable scorer in the national squad, someone Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman always turns to in the clutch.
Casio’s sharp shooting, patience and court vision are the weapons the national team will bring to the Asian championship in Wuhan, China, on Sept. 15 to 25. The champion automatically clinches the continental slot to the 2012 London Olympics.

WHO wants to be like Brian?

For the sake of his teammates, he just sacrificed his remaining college basketball career.

Just like what happened to Green Archers forward Brian Ilad in thier game against UE, when he gave rugged forward Mark Fampulme of University of the East a cheap shot by punching him a the head during the first quarter of their game.

I know, you won’t do it, unless maybe somebody provoked you. In this incident, I can say Brian did not think first before making that wrong move. It wasn’t actually Brian that started it.

Rico Maierhofer of La Salle gave Mark Borboran a hard foul and Fampulme approached Rico near the La Salle bench then Ilad suddenly punched Fampulme.

Ilad said: “I’m just trying to protect my teammates.”

Anyway, my dearest boss Al Mendoza, an ex-sports editor in Manila Bulletin, Philippine Daily Inquirer and Philippine Chronicle, always tell me this short advice every time we have our discussion.

There are three kinds of human beings in this green, green world one is a genius, the others are practical and stupid.

A genius is the kind who never thinks before they act. But, still, gets the correct idea or outcome from his actions because he is after all intelligent.

A practical person thinks first before making any move. Because he is aware of the consequences.

A stupid person is the kind that never thinks, neither the consequences. He just talks and acts without thinking.

I’m sure you have your own opinion on which category Bryan belongs to when he punch Fampulme.

Brian Ilad, a transferee from Philippine College of Criminology, is a versatile player who also played internationally when he was still a member of the RP-Youth team coached by Johnny Tam.

Brian, 22, technically out for the season, was just carried away by his emotions.

He already apologized to Fampulme, to the UE community, the UAAP and La Salle. But, still, the UAAP board of trustees and technical committee imposed a five-game suspension against him. Ilad played 13 games this year, averaging 4.2 points and 4.2 rebounds

Since this is his last year of eligibility in college basketball, it means that his short stint in the UAAP is also over because he played several seasons in the Colleges and Universities Sports Association (CUSA). This is his first and last year in the UAAP.

Under UAAP rules, a player is eligible for only five playing years or until he turns 24- year-old. For transferee players, his previous playing years with other leagues are counted, along with the one-year residency.

But I’m very grateful to Ilad because he accepted the punishment without question.

He is willing to publicly apologize. I’m hopefull that this incident will be a lesson to him. And by the way, Brian’s basketball career is not yet over. He can still play in the PBL to pursue his PBA dreams. Just be true, good and competitive.

Stalwarts from the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team as well as amateur hotshots who starred in the PBA Developmental League lead the cast of hopefuls in the 2011 PBA Rookie Draft  scheduled on August 28.


Philippine team point guards Jayvee Casio and Mark Barroca and swingmen Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter have turned in their applications for the annual event. Also joining the draft are sweet-shooting forward Mac Baracael, 2009 UAAP Most Valuable Player Dylan Ababou, and backup center Jason Ballesteros. Of the active SMART-Gilas players who were eligible, only team captain Chris Tiu did not join the draft.


There are rumors, however, that SMART-Gilas management is putting together an offer for some of the players to stay with the program. Draft applicants have until August 26 to withdraw their names from the pool.


Former Philippine Basketball League Most Valuable Player Paul Lee, meanwhile, leads the list of players coming out of the country’s commercial and collegiate leagues. Lee, one of the most electric players in the amateurs, will be joined by former University of the East teammate Ken Acibar, one of the most promising front court men outside the PBA.


Also in the draft mix are versatile FEU big man Reil Cervantes, Ateneo steals specialist Eric Salamat, and D-League Foundation Cup MVP Allein Maliksi.

PBA 2011 Leo Awards Complete List

PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) conducted its annual awarding for the top performers in the league. The end of season awards, which have been called the Leo Awards since 2003, are presented prior to Game 4 of the best-of-seven Finals between Talk ‘N Text and Petron Blaze  Sunday, August 14 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Major awards like MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Mythical Team selections are determined by the following criteria: statistics (30 percent), media votes (30 percent), player votes (25 percent), votes from the television broadcast partner (10 percent) and votes from the PBA Commissioner’s Office (5%).

While The Most Improved Player, All-Defensive Team and Sportsmanship awards don’t have a statistical component in the criteria, and will be decided upon purely by votes – 35 percent from the media, 35 percent from players, 15 percent from the television broadcast partner, and 15 percent from the Commissioner’s Office.

James Yap, Joe Devance Top Candidates For PBA 2011 MVP Race

As per rules, the top 5 players in statistical points (SPs) will become the official candidates for MVP, along with the Best Player of the Conference winners in each of the league’s tournaments.The top players in SPs of the teams which made it to the Finals of any of the three conferences but didn’t make it to the top 5 will also be included.

So the race for the Most Valuable Player award for the PBA’s 36th season will boil down to eight players.The top 5 players in statistics as of the end of the semis of the PBA Governors’ Cup are Joe Devance and James Yap of B-MEG, Arwind Santos and Jay Washington of Petron Blaze and Sol Mercado of Meralco. Washington was also the Best Player of the Conference of the Philippine Cup.

Jimmy Alapag of Talk ‘N Text was the Best Player of the Conference in the Commissioner’s Cup.

Kelly Williams of Talk ‘N Text and Mark Caguioa of Barangay Ginebra, meanwhile, led their respective teams in SPs.

Those eight players will dispute the league’s MVP award.

For the Rookie of the Year award, the PBA requires candidates to have played in at least 70 percent of their teams’ games at the end of the semifinals of the Governors’ Cup.

The Top 20 players in statistical points, on the other hand, became the official candidates for the Mythical First and Second Teams.

As for the Most Improved Player, All-Defensive Team and Sportsmanship Award candidates, they are consensus selections of the PBA Press Corps and the PBA Commissioner’s Office.

PBA Rookie Draft 2011 Complete List

Exactly on August 28,2011, The Philippine Basketball Association will conduct their annual rookie draft. Aspiring applicants that  successfully submitted their requirements before  the deadline will have a big chance to play to the most prestigious and respected basketball league in the Philippines.
